Seminar; J.S. Bach , Cantata BWV 140 “Wachet auf ruft uns die Stimme

This cantata is one of Bach’s greatest and most popular. I’m sure that some of you know it; now you will have an opportunity to get to know it better. For those of you who don’t know it, you are in for a wonderful experience.

Please prepare for the seminar by:

1) Learning the piece = music and text

and

2) Reading and thinking about its many dimensions:

--when, where, and why did Bach compose it

--how did it fit into the liturgical year

--what are its text sources

--what vocal, choral, and orchestral styles and genres/forms are present, how are they applied to the text sources and how do they contribute to the overall musical form (movements and how they are arranged)

--find examples of text painting and particularly vivid expressive gestures

--What are the forms of the movements

--how does Bach use harmony and key structure to set up his movement forms

READING

Search for online and printed materials. The Wikipedia article is a good start but it won’t take you very far. Through your UConn NetID you can access UConn’s Library resources (lib.uconn.edu) for access to Grove Dictionary, Harvard Dictionary, and many other sources.

N.B. I was a little disappointed last year because I had the impression that quite a few of you did not prepare. Please do. It is an amazing piece and it will pay off for you. Please have a score with you—online is ok but not as good as a printed score--and a copy of the text and translation.

Is anyone interested in being a discussion leader for one or more topics listed above. I don’t want to have to talk the whole time!

Please reply to Prof. Stanley at glenn.stanley@uconn.edu if you wish to be a discussion leader.

Please park in the South parking garage and bring your ticket from the garage for a validation stamp. If you park elsewhere you may be ticketed or towed. For a campus map please see: maps.uconn.edu.
